Perhaps in chess terms, optimism can be understood as "initiative". Initiative is real enough to be partially quantified, and cheers people up. There's always reason to believe in optimism, to be optimistic, because you have to initiative to change the future.

The reserve of observation effect is true: By trying to change the future, you will change the future. ;)
